Session Topics:
Wednesday (NOJOS Clinical Intensive):
Crime, Violence and Abuse in the Lives of Children: Developmental Victimology
Dr. Finkelhor will describe the broad range of crimes and victimizations children suffer from and discuss some of the reasons for this vulnerability. Participants will be able to:
- Understand the need for a field of Developmental Victimology.
- Understand all the forms of crime & violence that children are exposed to.
- Learn the most promising approaches to preventing and intervening with children and youth.
Thursday Morning Breakout (Troubled Youth Conference):
Myths and Realities about Internet Crimes against Children Publicity about online “predators” who prey on naive children using trickery and violence is largely inaccurate. Internet sex crimes involving adults and juveniles more often fit a model of statutory sex crime – adult offenders who meet, develop relationships with, and openly seduce underage teenagers -- instead of a model of forcible sexual assault or pedophilic child molesting. This session will inform participants about an alternative set of prevention education messages that may be better geared to the reality of the problem.
Thursday Afternoon Breakout (Troubled Youth Conference):
The Internet, Youth Safety and the Problem of “Juvenoia”
The Internet and associated electronic technologies are widely viewed as deviance amplifying social forces with particularly corrupting and endangering consequences for young people. Available scientific evidence, however, mostly dispels these anxieties. This session will help participants understand some of the sources of this widely noted "paranoia" of exaggerating the negative impact of social changes on juveniles, a phenomenon Dr. Finkelhor calls "juvenoia".

This conference will again be held at the scenic Snowbird Cliff Lodge in Little Cottonwood Canyon. (Little Cottonwood canyon, Snowbird entry #4)
